No Tech Dining with Kids

Ok, so many of us have gotten through a meal with our kids at restaurants by simply handing over the phone to let them play what ever game is fascinating them at the moment.  What if you dont have your phone or it runs out of charge?  You can still enjoy your meal and even entertain your kids while your at it.  Some of these are things my dad used to do with us, some are just plain mom ingenuity. Hope these help if you ever find yourself in this situation.  All have worked for us at one time or another.

THE WORM

Simply grab a straw. Remove wrapper by pushing it all the way to the end causing it to crinkle.  Once its off, lay it on plate or table and add just the smallest bit of water.  wrapper will expand causing worm like motions.

PACKET TIC TAC TOE

Using a pen or crayon, draw tic tac toe grid on a napkin.  Have each child or parent pick three sweetener packs of the same color. There are usually several packets to choose from.  You could even choose mayo or ketchup and place packets on grid as you play trying to get three packets in a row before the opponent blocks you.  You know how its played!

STRAW SEE SAW

Unwrap a straw.  Save wrapper and tear piece off small enough to roll into a ball that will fit into the straw and still move around.   Tear remaining piece of wrapper into two pieces big enough to fit into and block either end of straw.  Block one end with one of larger pieces, place small piece (ball) inside and block other end with second large piece.  Small ball can now move back and forth without falling out.  Use this as entertainment by itself as your child tilts straw from side to side.  You could even make two and have races.

NAPKIN ORIGAMI

Ok this one takes some previous know-how but who doesn't remember how to fold sailors hats and airplanes?  If you have a little practice or do your research, the possibilities are limitless.  You can fold cranes, owls, etc.  If you decide on the airplanes, don't launch them in the restaurant!  They probably wouldn't appreciate that.

GUESSING GAME

This one you can do with the sugar or condiment packets, your choice.  Place a packet in one your hands behind your back without your child seeing which hand you put it in then bring them forward. Have your child guess which hand. Simple, I know but kids love it.

STREET GAMES

This one is like the street games with the cups and very similar to the game above.  Put a balled up napkin or sugar packet under one of three identical cups and have them guess which cup its under after the cups have been switched around a bit.

HAPPY DINING, YA'LL
